Discipline Construction and Educational Orientation of the Department of History (Zhuhai)

 About the Department of History (Zhuhai)

 

       The history disciplines of Sun Yat-sen University were established in the 1920s. Many of the most important figures of historical research in modern China, including Tschen Yin Koh, Fu Sinian, Gu Jiegang, Cen Zhongmian, Liang Fangzhong, Liu Jie, Chen Xujing, were once part of the faculty, leaving a rich academic heritage.

 

       In 1998, the Ministry of Education authorized the Department of History to offer first-grade doctorate degrees. In 2007, Ancient Chinese History and Modern Chinese History were selected as national key disciplines. In 2011, under an adjustment of the subject directory, history disciplines were rearranged into three first-grade disciplines: Chinese History, World History, and Archeology. In the same year, the university was authorized to offer doctorate degrees in the aforementioned first-grade disciplines. In 2013, the first-grade discipline of Chinese History was recognized as a Provincial Key Discipline (Peak-Climbing Key Discipline), and the discipline of World History was recognized as a Provincial Key Discipline (Preponderant Key Discipline). In the third round of the Ministry of Education’s assessment and discipline ranking process, the discipline of Chinese History was ranked 4th in the country, while the discipline of World History was ranked 6th.

 

       The Department of History (Zhuhai) was established in October 2015, as part of the strategic scheme to fully elevate Sun Yat-sen University to an international top-tier university, enhance the soft power of Zhuhai City, and to support the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. The Department of History (Zhuhai) and the Department of History (Guangzhou) will integrate complementary disciplines and develop a new pattern of reciprocal development. The Department of History (Zhuhai) will continue to uphold the integrity of all first-grade disciplines of History, while laying special emphasis on the first-grade discipline of World History, and focusing on the development of Ancient World History, European History, Maritime History, Environmental History, in relation to the Belt and Road policy.

 

Discipline Development

 

       Geographical Advantages: Zhuhai, facing the South China Sea, is closely connected with Hong Kong and Macao and adjacent to Southeast Asia. The city is the key node of China’s Belt and Road strategy. Zhuhai also provides the most desirable environment for a first-grade discipline of World History. In coming years, the Department of History (Zhuhai) will develop the research areas of World History, Maritime History, Science and Technology History, and Regional and National History with a global perspective and forward-looking vision, and integrate the three first-grade disciplines  in an all-round manner.

 

       National Strategy: Within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Department of History (Zhuhai) will strengthen innovation in World History studies and fulfill the actual needs of Zhuhai City in cultural upgrading. By conducting targeted research on the geographic entities lying along the route of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, we seek to deepen and perfect the discipline system of World History.

 

       International Exchanges: The Department of History (Zhuhai) at Sun Yat-sen University will strive to explore innovative ways to promote international academic exchanges and cooperation.The department, with full openness, welcomes outstanding scholars from around the world to study and teach here. We will spare no efforts to advance the studies of Regional and National History, such as  Ancient World History, Egyptology, Assyriology, European History, Greek History, Roman History, British, French, German and Japanese History, the History of the Arabs, as well as Specialized History including the History of Sino-Foreign Relations, Science and Technology History and Economic History.

Historiography

 

       We strive to provide the elite of historiography with a solid academic foundation and a thorough understanding of the process of human civilization. We intend to train them to become multilingual, with a good command of English and a second foreign language, as well as a basic understanding of at least one European classical language such as Latin or ancient Greek.

       Introduction to Historical Geography, Introduction to Historiography, History of Chinese Historiography, History of Western Historiography, Egyptology, Ancient Greek and Roman History, European History, Asian History, Environmental History, Maritime History, History of Sino-Western Communications, Introduction to Archeology, Socio-economic History of China, etc.

       To provide historians with a solid academic foundation and global history perspective. We provide a complete and comprehensive fundamental education for students, while emphasizing the study of World History and recent discoveries in cutting-edge studies. Through learning, students will master the fundamental knowledge of World History and Chinese History, and understand the overall process of human civilization. We also intend to cultivate students’ linguistic competence: English, a second foreign language, European classical languages such as Latin and ancient Greek are part of the curriculum. Students are expected to have an understanding of ancient civilizations, international politics, international relations, global economy, and other related topics. Based on their understanding of multiculturalism, students will be guided to form a historical perspective of global view. Our goal is to support the national policy of “The Belt and Road”, fulfill the actual needs of Zhuhai city in terms of cultural upgrading, and provide intellectuals for China’s foreign affairs management and study of international issues.

In the course of learning from the great achievements of politics, economy, art and science of the world civilization, students are instructed to study systematically, to think independently, to explore actively, to reason logically, and to research meticulously.
